equivalent to 35mm
by: Neil

Describes the focal length that would be need to get the equivalent angle of view if using a 35mm "full frame" camera.
For example,
A 200mm lens on a crop sensor camera with a crop factor of 1.6 would be equivalent to angle of view from a 320mm (1.6 x 200) lens on a full frame camera.

"Equivalent to 35mm"
This term describes for a lens of any given focal length mounted onto a crop sensor camera, what focal length would be required to give the same angle of view on a full frame 35mm camera.
This is best understood with an example.
If I mount a 200mm lens on my Canon 60D which has a APSC sensor with a crop factor of 1.6 then the angle of view that I get is equivalent to someone shooting with a 320mm (i.e. 1.6 x 200) lens mounted on a full frame 35mm sensor camera such as the Canon 6D.
